Staindrop Scarth Hall

Staindrop Scarth Hall - Main Shot

The Village
Staindrop is one of County Durham’s green villages, with mainly eighteenth century stone houses surrounding a series of interlocking greens. In 1971 the centre of the village was designated a Conservation Area in order to secure its protection and improvement.

The Hall

The Scarth Memorial Village Hall was built in 1875 in memory of Mr. T.F.Scarth, who was land agent to the Dukes of Cleveland, the owners of Raby Castle. He resided at Keverstone Grange, an imposing house at the top of Keverstone Bank on the north side of Raby Park. An addition of a rear room was built after the 1914-1918 war to commemorate the men from Staindrop who died in that conflict and this room is a regular meeting place for Staindrop Parish Council. As well as dances, parties etc. during the Second World War, part of the hall was used to provide N.A.A.F.I. facilities to the many soldiers stationed in Staindrop and the surrounding district. A band of ladies provided this service on a voluntary basis. In the late forties/early fifties a Mr. Gough ran a cinema in the hall three times a week, a different film being shown on each occasion. This was a social event, with many people having their regular seats. Another popular service was the use of the upstairs reading room as a place to read the newspapers and books provided, and was an ideal place to socialise away from home. The Scarth Hall still hosts many activities and continues to provide that original intention of a centre for village life. The size and layout of Staindrop Village Hall makes it an ideal choice for private and business functions.
