This show peels away the commercial gloss of modern Christmas to reveal the life and death struggle behind many mysterious and murky goings-on in midwinter. As a singer, dancer and instrumentalist, John Kirkpatrick has been one of the most prominent figures on the English Folk Scene for many years. "An evening with John Kirkpatrick guarantees an evening of variety and entertainment of the highest quality. Folkworks said of him 'one of the major figures of the English folk scene, John is much acclaimed as a musician, composer, singer, songwriter..in fact he could be called the Renaissance Man of folk music." Barningham Village Hall THE LADY LOVES JAZZ - HELEN BARRETT
The Lady Loves Jazz is a wonderful celebration of traditional and contemporary jazz songs that will ignite the spirit and warm the soul. The Witham Hall, Barnard Castle TG COLLECTIVE
Moving through flamenco, jazz, gypsy, hotclub and contemporary classical influences, the group is centred around the two acoustic guitars of Jamie and Sam, Percy Pursglove on double bass, cajon and trumpet; Holly Jones on flute and alto flute, and Louis Robinson on violin. TGC also feature eminent flamenco dancer and choreographer Ana Garcia, and world percussionist/cajon player Tom Chapman, with new and interchanging shapes and sizes of ensemble within a performance. Touching on the influences and new arrangements of works by such luminaries as Paco de Lucia, Django Reinhardt and Horace Silver, the Collective also perform self-penned compositions and arrangements, and music by longstanding TG Guru Bryan Lester. Hamsterley Village Hall Cotherstone Village Hall CLIVE CARROLL Clive Carroll was described by Acoustic Guitar magazine as 'Probably the Best and Most Original Young Acoustic Guitar Player and Composer in Britain.' Clive is immersed in a diverse range of music swing, jazz, seamless changes from chamber music into Irish Reels, 16th and 17th Century lute pieces, satanic Romanian inspired tunes and finger lickin' hoedowns. His father made him his first banjo in 1977 at the age of 2 and a few years later he was playing in the family band. Stainton and Streatlam Village Hall A SWELL CHAOS - ODDVILLE STAGE COMPANY
Oddville is a theatrical, Canadian-centric nouveau-vaudevillian mash-up. Jenny and Steven present up to ninety minutes of comedic, live music, dancing, juggling, do-it-yourself liposuction, storytelling, improvisation, audience interaction and two handed simultaneous portraiture. It is an accessible, intimate comedy show that has epic proportions, making it' the biggest, little show on earth.' Highlights are thrilled to welcome Canadians Jenny and Steve on their first ever performing trip to the UK. Bowes and Gilmonby Parish Hall KIRSTY McGEE
On a welcome return to Highlights venues, Kirsty McGee will perform original songs written and performed by herself and accompanied by Mat Martin on banjos and guitars. Her new album entitled No. 5 and due for release in early 2010 features songs from her critically acclaimed 2008 release The Kansas Sessions as well as arrangements of old favourites and performances of brand new material not previously released. Listening to Kirsty McGee, you'd never guess she's from Manchester. Her style is foot stompin', porch rocking, banjo dappled carby shuffle - think 20's clarinet soaked swinging songs that sound familiar the minute you hear them. Kirsty describes her music as 'vaudebilly music for the new depression era.' Witty and catchy, you'll be humming these tunes all the way home! "Kirsty McGee has the kind of voice that stops you dead in your tracks, she blends styles like a master alchemist and has a way with melody that means the moment you hear her songs it's impossible to get them out of your head." Ralph McLean, BBC Boldron Village Hall PRETTY WITTY NELL - TWO FRIENDS PRODUCTIONS This sparkling one woman comedy tells the life of Nell Gwyn, the most popular mistress of Charles II. With the King on his death bed and creditors knocking on her door, Nell recalls her radiant life. From the gutters of Covent Garden to glittering actress, Nell survived the Plague and Great Fire to become the best loved character of her day. Admired by Pepys and the muse of Dryden, her life with King Charles lasted for eighteen turbulent years. His last words were of her. Whorlton Village Hall WHEN THE SHOPS SHUT - C SCAPE DANCE COMPANY
When the shops are shut for good, when the shutters come down for the last time, when the final homes are bought up, what happens to communities then? Cscape's new show uses the company's unique style of physical storytelling to tell the tales of villages and the people who live in them. Evocative, charming and funny, When the Shops Shut brings the characters found in these communities to life in a vivid blend of dance, theatre, film, poetry and music. The Witham Hall, Barnard Castle BACK TO THE LAND GIRLS with music by Jez Lowe - BAD APPLE THEATRE
It's 1942 and there are some new arrivals in the village. They're turning heads and breaking hearts as the fine girls of the Women's Land Army take to the hills. Whorlton Village Hall THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN - NEW PERSPECTIVES "Extra, extra! Read all about it! £10,000 prize for the first ever non-stop transatlantic flight!" By any standards it's a classic tale of plucky British pioneers - Captain John Alcock, dashing WWI fighter pilot and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown, navigational genius with a gammy leg, huddled together against the elements in the tiny timber and canvas cockpit of their converted Vickers Vimy biplane- talk about winging it! Now critically acclaimed comedy writing duo, Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon, have turned the story of the race to conquer the skies over the Atlantic into a fast and furious comic tour-de-force. Thrill to the sheer adventuring spirit of our unlikely heroes, marvel at their daredevil aerial antics and wonder at how the whole bally thing is told with just two actors and a crate full of funny props. Mickleton Village Hall CONTEMPORARY CRAFT TOUR SPRING 2010
Mandy Pattullo recycles and reuses old textiles to create contemporary heirlooms and garments. Her current body of work relates to the thrift and 'make do and mend' culture of past times, in particular needlecraft created by women in domestic settings. The work evokes an era when scraps of fabric were saved for making quilts, linen was repaired, socks were darned and buttons kept. Evocative objects and images force us to re-examine fabrics that have become flawed through wear and tear to find them in a new beauty. This exhibition will inevitably stir up personal memories of past sewing skills while introducing younger generations to an alternative to contemporary 'throw away culture', suggesting new ways of customising and transforming clothes using vintage textiles and charity shop bargains.
